Student Volunteers Needed to Organize 2014 SLAIS Children’s Literature and Media Research Conference

Welcome back to the new year at SLAIS. I hope you had a good summer. Time to plan a children’s literature and media research conference for spring 2014!

All MACL, MLIS, Dual, MAS students are invited to contact me about participating in a planning committee working towards a spring 2014 UBC graduate student organized and led children’s literature research conference.  The first meeting is Friday, September 13th at 5 pm at the Trail meeting room at the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies.Graduate students in the Master of Arts in Children’s Literature Program, LLED, SLAIS, English and Creative Writing, have organized this academic conference a number of times. It is now formulated as a biennial children’s literature conference. In past years, students have determined the theme, keynote speakers, chosen graduate student paper submissions for the conference, acquired funding, booked rooms, introduced the conference, presented papers at the conference, etc. Faculty have assisted with advice, guidance, and vetting of the paper proposals, but it is definitely a student initiative and requires a block of excited, committed students to carry it forward and complete.

The past 2012 conference was thrilling to be part of – it was a great success, with attendees coming from across North America, and two wonderful key notes academic speakers. The conference included readings from Creative Writing students as well as academic papers.

This is a wonderful opportunity for your resume and a chance to organize and present at an academic or creative writing presentation, and learn from and meet other graduate scholars and faculty in children’s literature and media.

Please let me know if you are interested. If you can’t attend the first meeting, let me you are interested and you will be informed of the follow-up meeting.

See you on the 13th of September.

All the best

Judi
