Faculty, Alumni, Students Featured at UNESCO Conference
The UNESCO Memory of the World Conference will be held in Vancouver September 26-28, sponsored in part by the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies, the iSchool at The University of British Columbia. This year’s theme is The Memory of the World in the Digital Age: Digitization and Preservation. The conference will be held at the Sheraton Wall Centre, and feature many contributions by SLAIS faculty, alumni and students. Dr. Luciana Duranti is a featured speaker in the opening plenary on Wednesday September 26, addressing Trust and Conflicting Rights in the Digital Environment. Dr. Lisa Nathan is chairing the session Giving a Permanent Digital Voice to the Silenced later in the afternoon, and doctoral student Corinne Rogers is co-presenting Shared Perspectives: Digital Forensics and Ancestral Computing. On Thursday, Dr. Nathan and doctoral student Elizabeth Shaffer are presenting Social Media, Records and Cultural Heritage: Revealing Tensions and Informing Design, and Dr. Victoria Lemieux is chairing the session The Economics of Preserving Digital Information, and then presenting Financial Records and Their Discontents: Safeguarding the Records of Our Financial Systems. Corinne Rogers returns as session chair for Technology as the Mediator of Heritage and Its Relations with People. On Friday, Dr. Duranti and doctoral student Sherry Xie are co-presenters of a showcase on The Indian Centre of Excellence in Digital Preservation and InterPARES. On Thursday, Dr. Giovanni Michetti is chairing the session Digital Curation: Convergence of Challenges, Institutions and Knowledge, and on Friday he presenting two papers, It FITS the Cultural Heritage! Formats for Preservation: From Spatial Data to Cultural Resources, and then Archives Are Not Trees: Hierarchical Representations in the Digital Environment. Doctoral student Jessica Bushey presents Born Digital Images: Creation to Preservation, and Adam Jansen presents Challenges and Triumphs: Preserving HD Video at the UBC School of Journalism. Finally, following the pre-conference public address, an awards presentation and reception will be held, where ARMA International Educational Foundation representatives will award the 2012 scholarships, including several to current UBC iSchool students.
Conference Travel funding for MLIS/Dual Students (MLIS, Dual)
If you are interested in presenting at, attending, organizing or participating in the organization of a conference in your area of study or any allied field before April 2013, SLAIS may be able to provide a small amount of financial support. To apply for funding talk to a full-time faculty member whose research and teaching are in your area of interest and ask them to nominate you for the award. When you talk to the faculty member you will need a description of the conference and, if applicable, evidence of your paper or poster proposal submission/acceptance and an estimate of the amount of funding needed.
This money is separate from the conference travel awards on the SLAIS web site.
Information for students in the MACL and MAS/Dual programs will be made in another announcement.
Please, note that
• support is for one conference per year for a Masters student
• students should indicate to the faculty member they ask to make a nomination that they have not received other travel money from this special fund for the current academic year
• support for students *presenting* at or organizing a conference takes precedence over participation in the organization of a conference or attendance; presenting a paper takes precedence over presenting a poster
• After receiving nominations from faculty members to the program chair and relevant faculty members will evaluate the nominations and select those that will be funded and for what amounts
Nominations that have been received by November 1 will be considered at that time. If funds remain after the initial allocation, nominations received at a later date will also be considered. If a student attends a conference prior to November 1st they may still be eligible for funding so long as all the relevant receipts can be submitted.
Deadline for September 2012 Registration Winter Term 1 Courses
Last day for change in registration and for withdrawal from most Winter Session Term 1 courses without withdrawal standing of “W” recorded on a student’s academic record is today, Tuesday, September 18, 2012. There has been some confusion as to why there are different drop dates for each course during the week. Graduate Studies follows the UBC Calendar deadline drop dates. See UBC Calendar http://www.calendar.ubc.ca/vancouver/academicyear.cfm?page=2012&view=09. If any student drops a course today and receives a “W” on their transcript, please contact Debra Locke, Graduate Secretary, to have it removed.
The drop dates in the SIS system are being looked into by Enrolment Services. Please know that the official drop deadline for Winter term 1 courses without withdrawal standing of “W” recorded is Tuesday, September 18, 2012.

SFU Library Features Exhibit Curated by Chelsea Bailey
Dual student Chelsea Bailey completed a practicum in the Simon Fraser University Library Special Collections this summer. As part of her learning experience there, she curated an exhibit on Gerald Giampa, a British Columbia printer who founded Cobblestone Press, producing book bindings, ornamental prints and stationery such as wedding invitations. The display is featured in Special Collections at UBC, and is described in a feature article at the SFU Library website.
