BCLA Conference Scholarships and Awards

Dear BCLA Members,

BCLA is fortunate to have several scholarships and awards to support members interested in attending the BC Library Conference. These Scholarships and Awards help us build a broad and inclusive Association by supporting those members who need funding to engage in new learning and in personal and professional development. This is especially true for members at the beginning of their library careers.

If you are new to libraries, or are in a situation where additional funds would make it possible for you to attend the BC Library Conference, then I invite you to take a look at the different Scholarship and Award opportunities BCLA has for you:

If you know someone who would benefit from a scholarship or award, please pass this information on to them!

[IFLA-L] Reminder: Call for papers – SIG Indigenous Matters

Call for Papers

Special Interest Group: Indigenous Matters

16 – 22 August 2014, Lyon

Theme:

Vive le “I” for indigenous in IFLA: strengthening cultural responsiveness and accountability in libraries and information

Due date for Proposals for Papers:
3 February 2014

Join in today!

The SIG Indigenous Matters invites proposals for papers that illustrate how library and information organisations demonstrate cultural responsiveness for and with indigenous peoples. This could be through recruitment, policy, practice, continuing professional development and/or something completely outside the box. We are seeking contribution’s that trigger the imagination; inspires positive change; dares others to replicate, or reaffirms what does not work.

Aligned with the Congress theme: ‘Librarians, Citizens, Societies: Confluence of Knowledge’, the SIG Indigenous Matters Open Session aims to identify, compare and address the challenges experienced when western world view meets indigenous world view or vice versa and how these issues are worked through by, or impact, library and information partnerships with indigenous communities and the creation of shared cultural meaning.

The goal is to create a diverse programme of 4-6 speakers representing indigenous peoples/ library and information organisations from different parts of the world who have different experiences to share.

The full Call for Papers is available on the WLIC 2014 website at http://conference.ifla.org/ifla80/calls-for-papers/vive-le-i-indigenous-ifla-strengthening-cultural-responsiveness.

Women and Technology Conference at Carleton University

The Women and Technology Conference is a meeting of Ontario scholars working in applied and technical fields, the natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences. This year?s meeting will take place in Ottawa, on Wednesday, April 16, 2014, with all events being hosted at Carleton University.

The goal of the Women and Technology Conference is to highlight scholarship on women and technology by focusing on two broad topics:

1.     Women as producers and users of technology in applied and technical fields.

a.     Examples of disciplines represented within this topic include: engineering; architecture; industrial design; neuroscience; and the biological, chemical, physical, and computing sciences.

2.     The relationship(s) between women and technology.  This includes the role of women as both subjects and objects in knowledge/media production, as well as the impact of women on the relative success of emerging and established technologies.

a.     Examples of disciplines represented within this topic include: film and media studies; business; sociology; history; public policy; and women?s and gender studies.

One of the major goals of this conference is to help advance the work of Ontario scholars by creating an interdisciplinary space for dialogue on women and technology. To help ensure that these goals are achieved, you are encouraged to tailor your abstract and presentation to a well-educated audience without expertise in your field.

Submissions reporting on original scholarship and research are preferred. Presentations not meeting this requirement will be considered on a case-by-case basis, with preference given to those who have first-hand experience working at the nexus of women and technology.

To apply: please submit a 150-word abstract with 3 keywords/phrases for a 10-15 minute oral paper presentation to: womenandtechcu@carleton.ca.

Deadline: February 7, 2014 at 4:00pm EST

In your submission, please indicate if you require assistance with childcare. The conference organizers will provide subsidies for child care and associated costs (e.g., parking and transportation).

Registration for Texas A&M Book History Workshop

Registration has opened for the thirteenth annual Book History Workshop at Texas A&M University, scheduled for May 18-23, 2014.  Taking place in Cushing Memorial Library, the Workshop provides an intensive, hands-on introduction to the history of books and printing.  Applicants who apply early (before February 15) and are accepted into the program will receive a $100 tuition discount.

This five-day workshop allows participants to create a complete facsimile of an eighteenth-century pamphlet by setting, correcting, and imposing type on an English common press, then printing the book in three octavo formes.  The Workshop’s projects extend to other handpress-era technologies, including typecasting, papermaking, bookbinding, and illustration. Together, these projects provide a unique opportunity for book historians, literary scholars, and other students to experience a complement of practices used to create books from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries.

The Workshop acts as an introduction to book history, providing participants the rare opportunity to learn principles of analytical bibliography through discussion sessions and hands-on engagement: students will cast type in a hand mould, couche sheets of paper, and cut relief illustrations.  The activities of the week are incorporated into the finished project, the pamphlet bound in wrappers of handmade paper, featuring printers’ devices cut by each member of the Workshop.

The Workshop has traditionally attracted scholars, librarians, archivists, students, teachers, and collectors, as well as those pursuing personal interests in book history.  Three graduate credit hours are available to students through the Workshop’s partnership with the Department of Library and Information Sciences at the University of North Texas.

To register, find out more, request a printed brochure, or see photographs from previous Workshops, please go to: <http://cushing.library.tamu.edu/events/book-history-workshop>, or contact Todd Samuelson at todd.samuelson <at> tamu <dot> edu

SEI 2014 registration is now open

Registration is now open for SEI 2014 (the Summer Educational Institute for Visual Resources and Image Management):  http://sei2014.org/registration/. Places traditionally have filled up quickly for this intensive workshop that specifically addresses the requirements of today’s professional in hands-on and lecture modules. Reserve your spot today!

SEI 2014 will be held at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign from June 10-13, 2014. The curriculum includes sessions on intellectual property rights, metadata, imaging, project management, and digital preservation. We are happy to announce that once again this year five scholarships will be sponsored by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation and you’ll find instructions on applying for the scholarships on the SEI website. Kress Scholarship applications are due by February 7, 2014.

SEI is suited to information professionals new to the field, current or recent graduate students, and more experienced professionals eager to respond to fast-changing technological advancements and job requirements. Individuals holding a range of professional roles have benefitted from past SEIs, including image collection managers, university and public librarians, archivists, and museum professionals responsible for image rights and reproductions. For more on SEI 2014, visit the website at http://sei2014.org/.

Graduates of SEI 2013 felt it was well worth the investment, providing perspectives not typically covered in graduate library science curricula. They praised the expertise and preparedness of the instructors, and also appreciated opportunities for sharing problem-solving perspectives, especially in the “Think Camp” session. In the post-SEI survey one participant summed up the experience saying “Since grad school courses never covered images, SEI really solidified my knowledge. It was especially useful to see the visual resources/art library/museum perspective on metadata and digital collection management.”

Please contact SEI co-chairs Amy Trendler (aetrendler@bsu.edu) or Meghan Musolff (musolffm@umich.edu) with any questions.
