Living Our Indigenous Languages
July 2­August 2 | UBC Vancouver Campus

Please join us for a summer institute that will bring together a diverse community of people who are interested in reclaiming and revitalizing Indigenous languages, many of which are endangered.

Indigenous and non-Indigenous students, faculty, staff, language advocates, community members, policy-makers, educators, practitioners, and scholars will be in attendance.

We invite you to enroll in all 4 courses (12 credits in 5 weeks), or in individual courses ranging from one to three weeks.

You will learn first-hand from language speakers, learners, and educators about their personal and professional experiences. You will also gain an understanding of practices in Indigenous language revitalization efforts.

Free Registration – Master Class in Creative Writing Open to MACL Students [MACL]

Registration is open for “The Joy of Revision,” with Maggie de Vries, a Saturday April 27th Master Class in writing, sponsored by CWILL BC (Children’s Writers and Illustrators of BC) and UBC through the MACL Program and Creative Writing.

MACL students have until April 22nd to register. There is no fee for MACL students. As this is a Master Class for experienced writers, it is not open to beginners. MACL registrants must have already taken at least one course in Creative Writing from an institution.

Dr. Lorne Whitehead Lecture – Thurs April 25 [All Students]

Dr. Lorne Whitehead: Enhancing the synergy between use-inspired university research and excellence

Thursday April 25, 2013 12:30-1:20pm Leonard S. Klinck Building room 464

Co-sponsored by Interdisciplinary Studies Graduate Program (ISGP) and Integrated Science Program, Faculty of Science. Free and open to all students and faculty. Refreshment will be served.

*Dr. Whitehead’s research centers on applying novel geometrical configurations to applied physics problems. His research also involves the study of high dynamic range display systems, and his work in this area led to a new a new display technology developed by UBC spin-off company, Brightside Technologies.  The company was acquired in 2007 by Dolby Laboratories and became Dolby Canada. Most recently, his research developed a technology for bringing sunlight deep into buildings for illumination, in order to reduce the need for electric lighting and improve the overall lighting quality.  This technology is now under development by UBC spin-off SunCentral Inc.

The David Noble Prize for Excellence in Health Information Research [MLIS, Dual]

The David Noble Prize for Excellence in Health Information Research was established in 2010 by the Health Libraries Association of British Columbia (HLABC) to honour and commemorate David Noble, a founding member of HLABC, and to encourage new information professionals in British Columbia to follow in his footsteps of excellence in health librarianship and in providing innovative health information services.

Children, Childhood Studies, and Popular Culture [MACL]

The Children and Childhood Studies Area of the Mid-Atlantic Popular and American Culture Association invites you to participate in the annual MAPACA conference. Papers in this area examine the impact of popular culture on children and childhood, as well as the role of children and young adults as influencers and creators of popular and American culture.

Work from the world of Children’s Literature would be most welcome in this area!

Single papers, panels, roundtables, and alternative formats are welcome.

Proposals should take the form of 300-word abstracts. The deadline for submission is Friday, June 14, 2013. This year’s conference will be in Atlantic City, NJ, Nov. 7-9, 2013. Value: $50,000 over one to three years
Eligibility: Open to current SSHRC doctoral and postdoctoral award holders

The Talent Award recognizes outstanding achievement by a current SSHRC doctoral or postdoctoral fellowship or scholarship award holder at the time of application. The Talent Award is given to an individual who maintains academic excellence, has a talent for research and knowledge mobilization and has demonstrated clear potential to be a future leader within and/or outside the academic sector.  One Talent Award will be awarded by SSHRC from the nominations submitted by Canadian universities.
