Pacific Northwest Chapter of the Music Library Association – Seattle (All Students)

The Pacific Northwest Chapter of the Music Library Association invites students interested in the access and preservation of music materials to our upcoming chapter meeting in Seattle on Friday and Saturday May 3 and 4. The annual meeting is a great opportunity to network with area music librarians and learn more about what we do.  The cost for the conference, in U.S funds, is $20.00 for registration, $20.00 for the Friday night dinner and $10.00 for the annual chapter dues.

For more information on the program please go to http://pnwmlameeting.wordpress.com/.

The registration form is available on the website and you can bring this with you and pay at the conference. Please  RSVP to Secretary/Treasurer Bill Blair at blairw@uvic.ca and let him know if you will be attending the conference and / or the dinner so we can plan for enough seats and meals.  Feel free to contact Verletta Kern (vkern@uw.edu) with any questions you might have about the meeting.  We hope to see you there!

International House Workshop: Academic Writing for International Students

Thursday, April 11th, 9:00 – 11:00 AM in the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre

This two-hour workshop will help students’ understanding and practice in two crucial areas of research-based academic writing: the organization of the message and the social positioning of the writer in relation to the reader and the writer’s knowledge claims.

Work on organization involves identifying and addressing two areas: the preview and review of ideas in the text, and issues with the flow of ideas that often arise in drafts. As for social positioning, two areas are also addressed: the options available to writers for managing interpersonal relations with readers, as well as writers’ options for evaluating their knowledge claims.

On completing the workshop, participants should have an improved vocabulary for recognizing and describing organizational and social aspects of academic writing, and an expanded capacity for addressing issues in these areas that may arise in their drafts. Participants are encouraged to bring a sample of their academic writing to the workshop.

Instructor: Alfredo A. Ferreira, Ph.D. Candidate, UBC Department of Language and Literacy Education
