Colloquium: Geoffrey Bowker on New Configurations of Knowledge Expression

Professor Geoffrey C. Bowker of the University of California at Irvine is the next speaker in the UBC iSchool’s continuing series of lunchtime colloquia. He is presenting “Emerging Configurations of Knowledge Expression” next Wednesday, November 7, from 12 noon to 1 p.m. in the Chilcotin Room (Room 256) of the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre at UBC.
Since the Enlightenment, we have built up a knowledge production system which assumes that prime form of expression should be the printed word. However, in a number of fields in the sciences, social sciences and humanities, this model is breaking down. In this presentation, Professor Bowker will explore the contours of the breakdown and discuss possibilities for the future.

About the speaker: Geoffrey C. Bowker is Professor at the School of Information and Computer Science, University of California at Irvine, where he directs a laboratory for Values in the Design of Information Systems and Technology. Prior to that, he was Professor of and Senior Scholar in Cyberscholarship at the University of Pittsburgh iSchool and Executive Director, Center for Science, Technology and Society, Santa Clara University. He is co-author, with Leigh Star, of Sorting Things Out: Classification and its Consequences; his most recent book is Memory Practices in the Sciences.

Professor Bowker’s talk will be recorded and made available on the School’s Video Resources page, at www.slais.ubc.ca/news/video.htm. There you will find links to recordings of most of our past colloquia and other events since early 2010.

Citation Management Using RefWorks, Zotero or Mendeley (All Students)

Need to manage large numbers of references and citations as part of your research, teaching or administrative work? Citation management tools are for you. These tools provide a simple way to store, organize and retrieve your citations in an effective manner, and can also help you in formatting in-text citations and bibliographies in your work.

Sign up for an introductory workshop for an overview of citation management tools, or for a tool specific hands-on workshop to a brief introduction to the main concepts of citation management and detailed instruction for use of either RefWorks, Zotero, or Mendely.

Final Call for Poster Proposals: Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) 2013 Conference (MLIS, DUAL, PhD)

Got an innovative library-based project, best practices to solve a problem, or unique research findings? Consider sharing them in a poster session! Posters should be an eye-catching visual representation of a topic, including graphics, tables, charts, text, and images. Presenters can communicate additional details via online handouts. Presenters share their ideas with colleagues as attendees circulate during one hour time blocks in the poster session area, located in the exhibits hall. Since space is limited at a poster session, a maximum of two presenters per poster at any one time is recommended. The Poster Session Committee looks for topics that will engage attendees during repeated presentations.

Potential topics can be seen in the program tags that are included on the proposal instructions page (link below). Poster topics from underrepresented categories are of particular interest.  Here are some examples:

* cataloging & technical services

* collections projects

* preservation projects

* digitization

* data management and services

Use the application form to sell your idea in a short, dynamic summary and provide a more complete discussion of the contents for the reviewers.  Please plan to submit an electronic version of your poster so that it can be posted online with conference handouts. Submissions are due by November 9, 2012.

Digging into Digital Book Collections (All Students)

Learn how to further your research by using digital book collections including Google Books and the Hathi Trust. You will leave this workshop knowing:

  • how to search within books to locate research material not evident from title or chapter descriptions,
  • conduct more thorough literature reviews on primary sources,
  • perform cited reference searches,
  • conduct historical word searches, and more!

Please bring your laptop or tablet computer.

Registration Open: Changing Times, Inspiring Libraries (MLIS, DUAL, PhD)

December 6th (evening) & December 7th 2012.

Leading Libraries Start with Community

A changing economy, a more diverse culture, a new information landscape; today’s citizen needs more knowledge, more quickly and from more sources than ever before, and they will be coming to libraries to get it. Will we be ready? Keynote speaker David Lankes makes it clear that libraries can and should be more than we expect, and shows how to get there.

Where does library innovation start? It begins when we reach past the traditional roles of the library. It begins when we reach into our community, engaging, understanding and better serving its needs. It begins when we reach out, creating partnerships and connections that strengthen the economic, social and creative life of the patrons we serve.

It begins when we start to expect more: from ourselves, from our libraries, and for the future of our communities.

If you expect more and want to explore the possibilities of innovation, join David Lankes, Ken Roberts, Andrew Petter and community and library leaders from across B.C. to examine how libraries can become the heart of a flexible, healthy community at the Changing Times, Inspiring Libraries Summit

Call for Proposals: BC Library Conference 2013 (MLIS, DUAL and PhD Students)

Please see the following call for proposals from the British Columbia Library Association.

The BC Libraries Conference is May 9th to 11th, 2013 at the Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel in Richmond BC.  The 2013 theme is “Are We There Yet?”  With all the discussion about change and transition in the library community these days we hope that this theme lets us poke a bit of fun at ourselves and at the same time lets us take some risks and speculate about what the future brings.

In 2013 we are planning on some Saturday sessions that are 45 minutes long. In the past sessions have usually been 75 minutes in length.

The 45 minute sessions will give us an opportunity to feature more sessions that are “TED Talk” in nature. Our hope is that an individual, or perhaps two people, will present on ideas that are still in the development stage or on programs and service that are new to the library community. The hope is that by focusing on the beginning of an idea or plan there will be lots of energy and speculation about where things might go.  We think these sessions will help us meet the overwhelming response from the survey saying that people want to hear about innovative, creative and original ideas…and not necessarily about what has been done.

We hope that session proposals will consider the theme “Are We There Yet?” and perhaps talk about some of the changes libraries are experiencing, what libraries are evolving in to, what we are all  learning in the process, and what we want to learn now and in the future. Feel free to be speculative, and free to share best practices. Be daring, take a risk and share your thoughts, ideas and wonderment about the road ahead.

Proposals are due by December 11th, 2012.

To submit a proposal for the 2013 British Columbia Library Conference please access the form here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/BCLC2013

Please feel free to share the call for proposals with others you think may be interested.
