ALC 2015 Call for Proposals

The Alberta Library Conference (ALC) 2015 Planning Committee, with support from the Library Association of Alberta (LAA) and the Alberta Library Trustees Association (ALTA), is pleased to announce that the call for proposals for the 2015 Alberta Library Conference is open. ALC 2015 takes place in Jasper, Alberta April 30 to May 3, 2015.

The ALC 2015 theme is #network. On its own, the word network has many meanings for libraries. The hashtag (#) takes this year’s theme to a different level. By the simple act of adding a hashtag to a word or phrase, it becomes searchable on social media, organized by subject or topic, and, if promoted by enough individuals, can “trend” and attract more people to the discussion. What are your strategies for building networks in your library and community groups? What role do libraries play in creating and facilitating community conversations? What are the important social trends that are impacting and shaping the service you design and provide? The #network theme also encompasses the personal networks we form. How does personal networking help improve your library and your life? For example, what kind of networking takes place at this conference and how does it benefit our libraries?

The Committee strives to provide a range of sessions that are of interest to the broader library community in Alberta. Proposals from small rural libraries to large academic institutions demonstrate the complexity of librarianship as well as the adaptability and diversity of those who work within them. We encourage proposals from academic, public, school and special libraries of all sizes for consideration to present at the conference.

We are interested in receiving proposals from trustees for sessions which will provide education and training for Library Board members. If you are a public librarian, please share this call for submissions with your Board. In addition, if trustees have suggestions for speakers or topics of interest to trustees, they are invited to send them to Dr. Tanya Pollard to see if a session can be developed.

If you would like to be part of our program focused on examining and expanding our networks and exploring some the many possibilities for connections facilitated by libraries through our people, services and spaces, please submit your proposal at Alberta Library Conference 2014 Call for Session Proposals http://bit.ly/1tKVLGh

Submission deadline is September 30, 2014. Thank you for your interest in the Alberta Library Conference.

SLAIS Looking for Student “Models”

The iSchool is in the midst of transitioning to a new website with support from the UBC Faculty of Arts. As part of the project, the Faculty of Arts has provided us with a professional photographer to take some pictures around our space throughout the latter part of August.

We are looking for some students who are not camera shy to volunteer to have their pictures taken for inclusion on the new website. Volunteers can have veto power over any pictures that they do not want included on the site in advance of the website going live.

Any students who are willing to volunteer can contact Dan Slessor at dan.slessor[at]ubc.ca . He will be eternally grateful.

This session is intended to provide students and recent graduates with an opportunity to present their work during the main conference on areas of interest relevant to information and knowledge management. The session will also serve as a social meeting point to facilitate networking between students, faculty, and professionals. Note: Presenters do not have to attend the conference in order to qualify. To accommodate individuals who cannot attend the conference, we are accepting pre-made video presentations and mailed-in posters. All abstracts, presentation media, and posters will be published on the SIG DL website after the conference.

Poster and lightning talk presentation proposals should focus on innovative projects that explore digital libraries through topics concerning community and/or culture, in keeping with this year’s ASIS&T annual meeting theme. Proposals may include, but are not limited to, past research, case studies, and current projects on areas such as social network analysis, linked data, open access and new publishing models, crowd-sourcing, big data, digital humanities, citizen science, or other projects falling within the panel’s theme. Students and recent graduates are encouraged to consult faculty and professional mentors but should not allow them to be a significant contributor to the content. Wapiti Regional Library – 2014 Marion Sherman Bursary

Children’s librarians are essential in building the next generation of library patrons. Public libraries provide access to recreational and informational materials, plus the experiences vital to a child’s enjoyment of reading and lifelong learning. The Marion Sherman Bursary for Children’s Librarians was established to encourage library science students to study children’s librarianship. This challenge is particularly acute for Saskatchewan libraries that have no library school from which to draw “home-grown” children’s librarians.

The $750 Marion Sherman Bursary for Children’s Librarians is awar science student in an accredited Canadian graduate school of library or information science to assist with tuition expenses.

The successful applicant should have a demonstrated commitment to children’s librarianship. Wapiti Regional Library Board administers the Marion Sherman Bursary for Children’s Librarians and would appreciate it if you could make available the attached poster and application form.

Wapiti commences accepting applications on September 1, 2014. The deadline for applications is Tuesday, October 14, 2014.

Attached are the 2014 Marion Sherman announcement poster and application.

Information literacy and employability literature review – new on the SCONUL website

Dear Colleagues

I am pleased to let you know about some new information on the SCONUL website, which has been produced on behalf of the SCONUL Strategy Group on User Experience and Success. This is a literature review on the contribution of information literacy and libraries to the development of graduate employability skills, produced by Megan Wiley, University of Bristol, under the guidance of Jackie Chelin, University of the West of England, one of our Group members. The Strategy Group’s remit includes information literacy, and over the last year we have been focusing on situating libraries’ “traditional” information literacy role in the new broader academic skills landscape, and the development of graduate attributes.

Using this review as a basis, we will be working on some case studies and advocacy tools for librarians working in this area, and to address this significant driver for development within institutions. We are also intending to create an Employability “Lens” for the SCONUL 7 Pillars Information Literacy model.

Literature review:
http://www.sconul.ac.uk/page/employability

I hope you find this useful and interesting. We would be happy to receive feedback, and any further ideas for developing this strand of our work which would be relevant for SCONUL members.

Kind regards

Jo Norry, Chair of SCONUL Strategy Group on User Experience and Success
Director of Libraries and Learning Innovation, Leeds Metropolitan University
