Call for Student and Recent Graduate Proposals Digital Liaisons: Building Communities and Empowering Culture through Digital Libraries

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Friday, September 19, 2014

ACCEPTANCE NOTIFICATION: Monday, September 29, 2014

The Special Interest Group for Digital Libraries (http://www.asis.org/sig/sigdl) of the Association for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T) is seeking proposals from students and recently graduated professionals (having graduated May 2012 or later) for a student panel at the ASIS&T 2014 Annual Meeting in Seattle on October 31 – November 4, 2014.

This session is intended to provide students and recent graduates with an opportunity to present their work during the ASIST annual conference on areas of interest relevant to information and knowledge management. The session will also serve as a social meeting point to facilitate networking between students, faculty, and professionals. Note: Presenters do not have to attend the conference in order to qualify. To accommodate individuals who cannot attend the conference, we are accepting pre-made video presentations and mailed-in posters. All abstracts, presentation media, and posters will be published on the SIG DL website after the conference.

Topics

Poster and lightning talk presentation proposals should focus on innovative projects that explore digital libraries through topics concerning community and/or culture, in keeping with this year’s ASIS&T annual meeting theme. Proposals may include, but are not limited to, past research, case studies, and current projects on areas such as social network analysis, linked data, open access and new publishing models, crowdsourcing, big data, digital humanities, citizen science, or other projects falling within the panel’s theme. (The list is meant to be illustrative, not prescriptive.)

Who is Eligible?

Submissions can be made as a single author or a group of authors, including collaborations between students or recent graduates from different institutions. Student ASIST chapters are particularly encouraged to submit a poster as a group. Authors do NOT need to be members of ASIS&T. However, they must pay for the conference registration fee and related expenses if attending in person. Students and recent graduates are encouraged to consult faculty and professional mentors but should not allow them to be a significant contributor to the content. All research is expected to be purely the students’ or recent graduates’ work and could include coursework, internship experiences, work related experience, and independent interests, including theses or other capstone projects.

Selection Criteria

Up to 10 posters and 5 lightning talk proposals will be accepted for the panel session. Poster submissions must include an abstract of no less than 250 words and a one page storyboard or mockup of the poster. Lightning talk submissions must include a two page paper using the ASIST short paper template available at https://www.asis.org/asist2014/AM14ProceedingsFormat.pdf. Students should indicate whether they will be present at the conference and which format they plan to present. Both posters and lightning talk proposals will be selected based on the following criteria: relevance of topics to the Digital Liaisons session and SIG DL mission, feasibility of presentation within a compressed format, and originality of research.

The following awards will be given at the session.

● $300 for the best paper

Upcoming Office Staff Changes

To all students,

As a new term begins at the school, you may notice some personnel changes in the iSchool office in the coming weeks. Dan Slessor, Student Services Coordinator, has taken on a new position outside of UBC and will be leaving his current position with the iSchool at the end of September. His role as Student Services Coordinator remains unchanged until then.

As a result of this personnel change, there will be several other shifts among the office staff:

  • Melissa Nightingale, our current Program Assistant, will be acting as the Student Services Coordinator (ischool.ssc@ubc.ca) beginning in October and continuing until a permanent replacement for Dan’s position is identified.
  • Veronika Yorumez, our current Information Assistant, will move to the role of Program Assistant (ischool.program@ubc.ca).
  • A new staff member, Peter Woods, will be temporarily joining us as the school’s new Information Assistant (ischool.info@ubc.ca).

Connie Wintels’ role as Administrative Assistant (ischool.admin@ubc.ca) remains unchanged, as does Mary Grenier’s role as Administration Manager (m.grenier@ubc.ca).

The office will be working diligently over September to train and prepare all of the staff members for their new roles. We appreciate your patience and understanding as the office staff get comfortable in their new positions.

Please direct any questions about this transition to Mary Grenier.

ALISE/ProQuest Methodology Paper Competition

Call for Papers

Submissions are due September 15, 2014.

The purpose of this award is to stimulate communication on research methodologies at ALISE annual conferences. The competition is open to all types of methodology. Papers must be limited to description and discussion of a research method or a technique associated with a particular research method. (For example, papers may address such areas as sampling, grounded theory, historical methods, or statistical methods.) Papers must explain the particular method/technique, including methodological implications for library and information science. Examples to illustrate its value can come from LIS-related published studies, proposed studies, and works in progress. Papers that stress findings are not eligible for this competition.

One winning paper will be selected. An honorarium of $500 will be awarded to the author(s). In cases of joint authorship, one honorarium will be awarded for the paper. Methodology papers prepared by joint authors are eligible for entry but at least one author must be a personal member of ALISE as of the deadline date.

Only one methodology paper per entrant will be considered; multiple entries from the same author will not be accepted. Authors may submit papers for other ALISE competitions; however, the same paper cannot be submitted for more than one category.
Authors may not submit papers that have been published. Manuscripts that have been submitted for consideration for publication as well as unpublished manuscripts posted to institutional repositories are acceptable as submissions. Authors who have won the award within the past five years are ineligible for this competition.
Papers submitted to this competition can originate from a variety of different sources and applicants are encouraged to develop such papers from their research. Methodology papers completed in pursuit of master’s and doctoral studies (e.g. thesis, seminars, dissertation, course work paper) are eligible, as are papers generated as a result of a research grant or other source of funding.

The papers will be judged by the ALISE/ProQuest Methodology Paper competition Committee with the assistance of additional ALISE members in those cases where the methodology warrants. All reviewing is “blind.”

Methodology papers will be judged on the following criteria:
• Description of the method or technique.
• Explanation of methodological implications of the method/technique for LIS.
• Examples of actual or potential applications to library and information science research or studies in related fields (i.e., from published studies, proposed studies, and work in progress).
• Appropriateness of the examples to the paper’s focus on method/technique.
• Clarity in the writing and in the paper’s organization.

The committee reserves the right to select no winning paper if, in its judgment, none of the papers is considered satisfactory.
The winners of the awards are expected to present a summary of their papers at the 2015 ALISE Annual Conference.

Submission Requirements
1. Papers, including the abstract and references, must not exceed 25 double-spaced pages (6,000 words), should have one inch margins and be in 12 point font.
2. Two title pages must be sent: One with, and one without, author name(s) and institution. Both title pages must carry the name of the competition for which the paper is being submitted.
The methodology paper, including an abstract of no more than 200 words, must be received no later than September 15, 2014. It should be emailed as a Word attachment to:

Attention MLIS and Dual students, one of the current postings at the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre has been extended until September 2. They have not received as much interest in the posting as they had hoped. This is a great chance to get some great work experience in a convenient location.

The original posting can be found here:

New iSchool Website

Hi all,

In anticipation of the new school year, the school has launched a new website. The URL is the same.

Please take some time to get familiar with the new site. All of the pertinent information from the old site has been transitioned over to the new website, but it will likely not be in the same location, since our top-level navigation has been altered in compliance with the UBC Faculty of Arts’ Common Look and Feel. Please note the “Current Students” section on the front page, which includes the link to the iSchool Central portal. Information on courses, your degree programs, and funding/fees can be located under the “Programs” tab.

Some exciting new aspects of the new site include its responsive design, which will allow for greater functionality on mobile devices, and better integration with our social media platforms. Over the coming weeks, we will be adding additional items to the website, including updated images, interactive forms, and more.

If you notice any glitches or content errors, or if you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact Dan Slessor at ischool.ssc@ubc.ca

Update: Some people have noticed that they are receiving a “403 error: Forbidden Access” when trying to access the site. Arts IT has informed us that this is a “caching error that will correct itself shortly. If the same users who are experiencing the error use a different browser, they should find that they are directed to the homepage of the new site. The reason the error message is appearing is because their browser is searching for the exact address of the old page, however, once the cache has cleared they will no longer experience this issue.”

Please let us know if you continue to experience any issues accessing the site.

SHARP 2015 in Canada – Call for papers

SHARP 2015 Call for papers
Longueuil and Montreal, 7 – 10 July

CONFERENCE THEME
Models of revolution or conquest shape much of the general discourse on the history of the book, despite the fact that many excellent studies, in their details, demonstrate quite the opposite, showing rather the continuity and gradual migration of forms and practices in book culture. Oral story, manuscript, printed book, newspaper, e-book: each is reborn in the next in ways that more often than not amount to a complex accumulation rather than a clean replacement. In this sense, books and the book trade itself may be likened to genes, which both perpetuate themselves and change; they recombine with themselves while altering in response to their environment. SHARP 2015 presents the following challenge to the world book-history community: can we reconsider the history of the book using models of transition, permeation, rebirth, inheritance, and/or organic transformation? How do books, book cultures, or book systems spread and readapt? What comes into view (or what fades) if a conceptual model of generational change is brought to bear on the question of how books are made? Are there areas in which a kind of revolutionary model is still appropriate?
