FIREtalk: Learning Machines [all students]

The Research Commons invites graduate students from any discipline – engineers, philosophers, computer scientists, writers, neuroscientists, artists, psychologists, social theorists, and others – to explore the boundary between mind and machine.

Join us for the next FIREtalk (bit.ly/firetalk), Learning Machines.

When: Wednesday, November 27, 4-6 pm

Where: Koerner Library, Room 216

About the Topic

What cutting-edge applications of computers and machines help improve human life? What are the different approaches to the study and design of learning and intelligence? How can systems learn from data? What natural behaviors can be simulated by a machine? Can the brain be interpreted as a computer? How do our cultural perceptions of machines influence the way we interact with them? Where can speculative fiction and other works of the imagination take artificial intelligence?

Be part of the discussion: submit your proposals for a 5-minute presentation by the 12th of November, 2013. Find more information at: http://bit.ly/FTpresent

Interested but don’t want to present? Attend as an audience member and join the discussion after the presentations! To attend without presenting, register at: http://bit.ly/27NovFT

Call for Proposals Workshop for Instruction in Library Use (WILU) 2014

The WILU Program Committee invites proposals to be considered for presentation at WILU 2014, to be held at Western University in London, Ontario from May 21-23, 2014. WILU originated at Western in 1972 and returns to the Forest City in 2014 inviting you to “E-magine the Possibilities”.

Ever-changing educational environments create limitless possibilities for innovation by information literacy librarians. We invite presentation proposals that consider various methods of instruction, different aspects of e-learning, assessment techniques, or multiliteracies.

Share the new IL opportunities you’ve uncovered through e-learning, discuss how your instruction program is e-volving or reflect on how IL instruction is now e-valuated at your institution. You can even choose to be bold and e-magine the future of information literacy for academic libraries! Deadline for proposal submissions is December 9, 2013.

Session opportunities exist for presentations (45 minutes), Ignite Talks (5 minutes), posters (60 minutes) and pre-conference workshops (2.5 hours).

For a full description of each session type, and for the link to the WILU 2014 proposal submission form, please visit:  http://lib.uwo.ca/wilu2014

WILU 2014 is sponsoring a special award for the best accepted proposal submission from a current student enrolled in an ALA-Accredited (or equivalent) Master’s Program in Library and Information Studies at the time of submission. This award is intended to support students who have submitted proposals in any of the following conference formats: Presentation Session, Ignite Talk, or Poster Session. The amount of this award is up to $500 (CAD). This amount is intended to cover registration and or travel to WILU 2014. Please see the “Student Award” page for eligibility and application details.

Potential presenters will be notified by February 14, 2014. All presenters are responsible for their own registration, travel and accommodation.

The Program Committee will employ a double blind selection process in which all identifying information in the proposal, including the presenters’ names, institution and contact information, will be excluded. Proposals will be evaluated based on originality, practicality, relevance to the conference theme, and contribution to the field.

Questions? Please email one of the Program Committee co-chairs, Debbie Meert-Williston dmeertwi@uwo.ca or Nazi Torabi ntorabi@uwo.ca

See you at WILU 2014!

Opportunity to study in London, Summer 2014 [MLIS, Dual]

The opportunity below comes from the School of Library and Information Studies at Florida State University. Students are to assume all associated costs.

NOTE: All transfer credits would need to be approved by the Graduate Adviser, Dr. Rick Kopak.

An exciting opportunity to earn six graduate LIS credits while living in central London is being offered by the Florida State University School of Library and Information Studies.  Two courses, focused on digital and social media, taught by Dr. Nancy Everhart from July 8 to July 29, 2014 at the FSU London Centre, will use this dynamic city and the surrounding areas as a backdrop for creating projects such as podcasts, social networking sites, blogs, short films, and digital photography.  No prior experience with these media is required. All classes will be field trip based. There are online requirements before and after the time in London.

Other pertinent information:

  • The two courses are: LIS 5313 -Digital Media: Concepts and Production and LIS 5385 – Social Media Management. Participants must take both courses and they will be focused on application of multi-media to libraries and managing social media sites. Students will have the opportunity to apply course material to their current work situation if desired, or to build a professional portfolio.
  • The FSU London Centre is housed in a 17th century building that FSU owns in the heart of ‘literary London’ and within walking distance to the shopping district and to the West End theater district.  It is less that one block from the British Museum and a tube stop.  Students are housed in flats at the Centre or in nearby Bloomsbury.
  • Day trips to Paris, Oxford, and the Warner Brothers “Making of Harry Potter Studio Tour” in Leavesdon are included.  In Paris we’ll visit the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, enjoy French cuisine and a cruise on the Seine.
  • Two theatre shows are included.
  • Many field trips are tied to settings of children’s stories like Harry Potter, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, and Mary Poppins.  Visits to famous landmarks including Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, St. Paul’s Cathedral, the London Eye, Kensington Palace, Hyde and Regent’s Parks, the British Library and numerous museums form the backdrop for media projects.
  • Cost is $6330 for both in-state and out-of-state participants.  The fee includes all registration and instructional costs for 6 graduate credit hours; travel on the Eurostar from London to Paris; all admissions to program social/cultural activities; welcome and farewell meals; health insurance; international student ID card; T-shirt; full-time academic and administrative support.
  • Airfare, other meals, books and supplies are not included in the cost.
  • Credits earned in this program may be later transferred into the master’s degree program at FSU for students who may be accepted at a future date.  These offerings are regularly offered graduate courses.
  •  Extra time is budgeted for travel on your own.
  • This program is open to students from other universities who may wish to transfer the credits, or to non-students (school librarians, teachers, other librarians or IT professionals) who are interested in this exciting summer opportunity for professional development continuing education credits. For those seeking reimbursement from their employers for tuition, these costs can be broken down.
  • Important Deadlines:

o   December 4, 2013 – Application Deadline – $100 Deposit due

o   January 15, 2014 – Confirmation Deposit – $1500

o   February 19, 2014 – Remaining full payment due

January 2014 term WISE Course Requests Start Today [All Students]

The date on which you can begin to request spaces in the January WISE courses has changed to today, October 28, 2013.

Registration for the January 2014 term WISE courses opens October 28, 2013. Information on the available courses can be found here:
http://www.slais.ubc.ca/courses/wise/13-14-wt2/wise-13-14-wt2.htm

General information on WISE can be found here:
http://www.slais.ubc.ca/courses/wise.htm

It is possible additional WISE courses will be added later. Currently four courses are listed that have been approved by the faculty for qualified SLAIS students.  We approve just about all possible courses that do not have significant overlap with an existing SLAIS course, do not require physical residency at the host program, and have a credit structure that is compatible with the structure at UBC.

You should have all already received an email with instructions on how to request spaces in the WISE courses.

————–

A reminder that space in the WISE courses is very limited. Do **NOT** request a space in a course unless you are firmly committed to taking it if you are offered a space. Being given a requested space and then dropping the course near or after the course begins will put students at the bottom of the wait list for future WISE courses.

The Oxford English Dictionary, the Grimm Brothers, and Miley Cyrus: On the Changing Expectations of the OED: Past, Present and (Possible) Futures

The Oxford English Dictionary, the Grimm Brothers, and Miley Cyrus: On the Changing Expectations of the OED: Past, Present and (Possible) Futures

November 15, 2013
Dodson Room, 3rd Floor, IKBLC
Stefan Dollinger, assistant professor of English language, UBC

This brief social history and criticism of the Oxford English Dictionary will contextualize its origins and reflect on how perceptions and expectations of the OED have changed over the decades. Professor Dollinger will consider whether Miley Cyrus may one day popularize concepts, words, and phrases that could find entry into the OED, whether such colloquialization has a place in this prestigious work, and how we might conceive of the English-language dictionary in the 21st century.

Presented by UBC Library’s Rare Books and Special Collections. Organized by SLAIS student Chelsea Shriver.

UBC Rare Books and Special Collections – The Road to the OED: A History of the English-Language Dictionaries

Curated by SLAIS student Chelsea Shriver.

November 7—December 31, 2013
Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Saturday, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Rare Books and Special Collections, Irving K. Barber Learning Centre
University of British Columbia

Join Rare Books and Special Collections on a journey through the history of English-language dictionaries. This exhibition will explore how lexicographers of the past built on the work of their predecessor (or stole from them, depending on how you look at it), each advance bringing us further down the path that eventually culminated in the Oxford English Dictionary, “a monumental achievement, without parallel in the English language and in few others.”

Free and open to the public.
